Kate Cartwright's Goddess Art
Sleeping Lady of Malta
This is one of two identical small sculptures found lying on the floor of the underground temple of Malta when it was first discovered. It is dated between 3800 and 3600 BCE. Known as the Hypogeum, this underground center was at once a temple, tomb and healing place. In the cult religion known as the Mysteries there was a practice of sleeping within a temple for a number of successive nights in order to obtain oracular dreams. This stylized version by Kate Cartwright was first drawn as a magazine illustration and has been used many times since to accompany articles about the power of dreams.
